Local MP Robert Largan and the then-Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities, The Rt Hon Michael Gove MP, were given a tour of the world-renowned Swizzels sweet factory.
Swizzels —famous for Parma Violets, Drumsticks, Refreshers and Love Hearts— is based in the High Peak town of New Mills.
Originally based in London, the Blitz during the Second World War forced the company to relocate to a disused lamp wick factory in New Mills, where it remains to this day.
From its humble origins, Swizzels has grown into a multi-million-pound business that sells its products all over the world. The MPs were keen to learn more about Swizzels’ success story.
Swizzels’ Managing Director, Jeremy Dee, guided the MPs around the factory, and explained the workings of both the factory, manufacturing processes, and business model.
Robert Largan, MP for High Peak, commented:
“Swizzels is an iconic local business and it was great to be able to take the Minister to visit New Mills and make the case for investing in the High Peak. I’ll always stand up for our area and be a champion for local businesses.”
The Rt Hon Michael Gove MP commented:
“It was great to visit Swizzels sweet factory to learn more about their business.
“It was also lovely to come to New Mills and see why it is the Love Heart capital of the world!”
