Local MP Robert Largan has written to the Prime Minister, together with 43 other Conservative MPs, to call on the Government to provide as much support as possible to those European countries who are the first safe haven for refugees from the conflict in Ukraine—namely, Poland, Moldova, Romania, Hungary, and Slovakia.
The letter also called on the Government to apply a flexible and pragmatic visa policy for Ukrainians seeking temporary refuge in the UK.
The European Union has estimated that up to 4 million Ukrainians may try to leave the country as a result of the Russian invasion.
Yesterday (28 February), the Home Secretary confirmed that British nationals and any person settled in the UK will now be able to bring over their immediate Ukrainian family members. This means that an additional 100,000 Ukrainians can now take refuge in the UK.
In addition, the Home Secretary has confirmed that Ukrainians who are on work, study or visit visas in the UK will have their visas temporarily extended or be able to switch onto different visa routes.
The UK has also pledged £140 million of humanitarian aid to Ukraine, helping to supply vital medical supplies.
In the High Peak, Mr Largan has praised the work of local charities in response to the conflict. Little Cherubs, based in Chapel-en-le-Frith, and Buxton Baby Bank have both launched collections for children’s clothing and toiletries.
Robert Largan, MP for High Peak, commented:
“Vladimir Putin is nothing short of a thug on the world stage. The invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces is totally unjustifiable.
“The people of Ukraine are putting up a fearsome resistance that is nothing short of inspiring. I am deeply concerned, however, by the clear evidence of Russian war crimes.
“I am very proud of the support that the UK has provided, including anti-tank weaponry and a formidable range of sanctions to hit Putin’s cronies.
“It has never been more important that we stay united and stand up for what is right.”
