Robert Largan MP has recently launched his campaign to save Buxton’s Colposcopy Clinic.
Buxton’s excellent facility, which specialises in testing for abnormal cells before the development of cervical cancer, is due to close after the clinician who runs the clinic recently announced his retirement.
Women are often referred to the colposcopy clinic for a biopsy if cervical screening finds changes to cells during cervical screening.
Each year, cervical screening saves an estimated 5,000 lives by detecting cancer risks early and allowing for more efficient and effective treatment.
Buxton’s colposcopy clinic is based at Buxton Hospital on London Road. It is the only local facility of its kind and has operated since 2015 in its current capacity.
With the closure of the Buxton colposcopy clinic, High Peak women will be asked to go to Royal Chesterfield Hospital instead, which is 26 miles away.
Robert Largan MP has requested an urgent meeting with Joined Up Care Derbyshire to discuss the future of local colposcopy services.
The High Peak MP has also launched a petition, calling for Buxton’s colposcopy clinic to be retained.
This follows on from Mr Largan’s previous successful campaign to reinstate the breast cancer screening mobile unit to High Peak, after over 2,000 local people signed his petition, which he presented to Parliament.

Robert Largan, MP for High Peak, commented:
“Buxton Hospital’s colposcopy clinic provides an absolutely vital service which has undoubtedly saved many lives by detecting potential cancers very early on. I recently visited Buxton Hospital and talked to local healthcare professionals who really value the clinic and are desperate for it to continue.
“I’m worried that, with the clinic no longer being local, some women will be unable to attend appointments and very serious conditions like cervical cancer could go untreated.
“I hope we can find a solution to keep this vital facility open. Please join my campaign and sign my petition, so that we can push for the colposcopy clinic to stay in Buxton!”
