On Tuesday 14 July, MP for High Peak, Robert Largan met with the Secretary of State for Education, Gavin Williamson. MPs from across Derbyshire attended the socially distanced meeting. They discussed plans to re-open schools and issues affecting local education providers.
The meeting was held along with several other Derbyshire MPs such as Amanda Solloway, Sarah Dines and Lee Rowley.
On 2 July, the Government unveiled plans for all children to return to full-time education from September.
Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, students, teachers and parents have contacted Robert Largan. The lockdown has introduced complex challenges for educational settings with childcare arrangements, home schooling and most recently the phased return to classrooms. Robert continues to raise their concerns with local and national Government before schools and nurseries return this autumn.
Robert Largan MP commented:
“At the meeting we discussed the importance of re-opening schools in September, and I also raised the issue of home-to-school travel in Derbyshire.
“I want to see all children back in schools in September. The importance of teacher-pupil contact is vital for the education and wellbeing of children. I am pushing the Government to support schools that are struggling with plans for reopening.
“It’s important to me that children from all backgrounds get a world-class education."
