Buxton Station has been featured in a new guide as an example of excellent railway station sustainability practice. High Peak MP Robert Largan has congratulated Friends of Buxton Station on this recognition of their hard work.
Launched by the rail industry, the Sustainable Stations: Best Practice Guide is a pledge made by train companies to make stations across Britain more sustainable, taking action to reduce waste, support local wildlife, and tackle climate change.
The guide sets out a commitment to cutting the carbon footprint of the 2,563 railway stations across Britain, which cover an area roughly the size of central London. Around 85 per cent of people in the UK live within 5 km of a station.
Rail accounts for just 1.4 per cent of transport emissions despite representing 10 per cent of all journeys. The new guide outlines different options to develop station sustainability further, building on current environmental and sustainability best practice initiatives such as the ‘Buzzing Stations’ community project at Buxton station.
Robert Largan MP commented:
“I am a big fan of what the Friends of Buxton Station have achieved. It was a pleasure to visit last year and lend a hand with their ‘Buzzing Stations’ initiative. So many local people have pitched in, sharing their passion for nature.
“This national recognition is great news for Buxton Station and the local community. Protecting the environment is a responsibility we all share, and I will keep working with people from across the High Peak to maintain and improve our natural heritage.”
