High Peak MP Robert Largan recently visited Brown Knoll, one of the highest hills in the Peak District, with Moors for the Future Partnership (MFFP) to see the progress they are making restoring peat moorlands.
Since 2003 the award-winning partnership has already transformed the peatlands of the Peak District, South Pennines and West Pennine Moors.
MFFP’s role in managing the natural capital of the uplands has grown, with increasing frequency of wildfires and flooding, alongside the need to improve water quality.
This work is far from complete, and there remains a pressing need to continue to support the vital work of bog restoration.
Since the election, Robert has been campaigning for action on climate change and peatland restoration. His first question in Parliament highlighted the importance of restoring our peatlands to reduce fire risk and tackle climate change. The High Peak MP later secured a big increase in funding for peatland restoration in the Emergency Budget in February.
MFFP recently were awarded £960,000 by the Government for peatland restoration in the Peak District.
Robert Largan MP commented:
“Restoring our moors is vital in tackling climate change, increasing biodiversity, improving water quality and reducing both flooding and fire risk.
“Everyone in the High Peak has a responsibility to respect and care for the environment in the Peak District. That’s why I campaigned so hard to successfully secure a big increase in the Nature for Climate Fund at the last Budget. I’m delighted that an additional £1million of funding has now been secured.”
