Robert Largan MP welcomed the recent announcement by the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities that the Government will be bringing in new laws to restrict the use of homes as short-term AirBnB lets.
The widespread use of homes and second homes as short-term AirBnB lets in tourist areas like the Peak District is hindering local residents, and especially younger workers, from finding long-term private rental properties.
Given the significant impact this has on both residents and local businesses in tourist hotspot areas, like the High Peak, the Government has committed to introduce planning reforms into the landmark Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill, which will help ensure local housing is available for local people.
Further details of these reforms are set to be announced in due course.
Robert Largan, MP for High Peak, commented:
“We are all very lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world. Tourism is important to our local economy and AirBnB and holiday lets have a role to play.
“However, this should not be at the expense of local people, who are too often unable to find anywhere affordable to live in the area they grew up in.
“I am really pleased that the Government has listened to us and is taking steps to properly regulate AirBnBs. It’s vital that local people can afford to live locally in High Peak!”
