Local school children recently got the chance to grill their local Member of Parliament.
The opportunity occurred during Robert Largan MP’s recent visit to Whitfield St James Church of England Primary School.
The local MP visited and met with the School Parliament. The School Parliament, which includes students across several year groups, recently elected a new Student Prime Minister and Student Deputy Prime Minister and even have their own Cabinet.
Questions from the Student MPs covered a wide range of topics including parliamentary processes, the Coronation, what the role of an MP entails, what working in Parliament is like and, of course, Mr Largan’s favourite football team.
On national issues, the enlightened youngsters grilled Mr Largan on environmental issues and healthcare. On local matters, there were questions on road safety, especially on and around Pikes Lane, school funding and the need to build Gamesley station.
Mr Largan was then given a tour of the school by the Head, Mr Woodward, where he was shown the school’s facilities and some of the fantastic scientific and artistic work created by students over the Lent term. The tour also took in the outdoor facilities, the climbing wall and the school’s dedicated learning support hub, which provides invaluable support including for local children.
Robert Largan, MP for the High Peak, commented:
“It was lovely to visit Whitfield St James Primary School and to do a Q&A with the Student Parliament. It is great to see so many youngsters engaged with and learning more about our democratic processes.
“I would also like to pay tribute to the staff at Whitfield St James Primary School. I have nothing but praise for the hard work and dedication of Mr Woodward and his staff in creating a positive and nurturing educational environment.”
