High Peak MP Robert Largan has encouraged those looking for apprenticeships to apply for new roles in the National Grid, which will play an important role in transforming the energy sector and reaching net zero climate targets.
National Grid plays a vital role in maintaining Great Britain’s energy system. Their research shows that the UK energy sector needs to recruit for 400,000 skilled jobs right across the country between now and 2050 to get the UK to net zero.
They are currently looking to recruit ambitious young people for their apprenticeship programmes, which offer opportunities to foster and shape the skills needed for a green energy future through a mix of studying and hands-on experience.
The schemes – rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted – are suitable for young people who want a meaningful career in the engineering or data analysis sectors.
The announcement of these latest apprenticeship opportunities with National Grid follows Robert Largan MP’s successful High Peak Jobs & Apprenticeships Fair at Chapel-en-le-Frith High School in October.
The first-ever High Peak Jobs & Apprenticeships Fair was attended by hundreds of local residents and was designed to help our young people enter the job market as they leave education, after the difficulties of the last 18 months caused by the pandemic.
The deadline to apply for National Grid’s apprenticeship programmes is 27 February 2022.
Robert Largan, MP for High Peak, commented:
“Energy sector apprenticeships like these are vital to building the workforce that will help the UK tackle climate change. These programmes are a great opportunity to play an active role in delivering on climate ambitions at a critical time in the UK’s path to net zero.
“Apprenticeships are also a fantastic way to develop your own skills in a range of areas, through a mix of studying and practical training.
“I want to make sure that no young person has been held back as a result of the pandemic. That’s why I organised my first-ever High Peak Jobs & Apprenticeships Fair earlier this year, helping to get young people into high-quality work.
“I am also working hard to bring together some of the High Peak’s most recognisable businesses to create more opportunities for young people in the future.
“Anybody who is looking for an apprenticeship placement and wants to play a key role in achieving a greener future should consider applying to the National Grid today.”
Jade Kimpton, an apprentice training in the National Grid, said:
“I’m on the National Grid Level 4 higher apprenticeship, training to become a substation engineer.
“This programme provides on-the-field experience working on substation equipment, includes a range of training opportunities and I will also gain a Foundation degree in Electrical Power engineering.
“For anyone that’s thinking about applying, my advice is to explore all the options available. Whether your preference is hands-on and practical, or more office based, there’s an apprenticeship in the energy sector for everyone.”
