Following reports of raw sewage entering High Peak waterways, local MP Robert Largan has urged residents to be careful, and highlighted his work in Parliament tackling this issue.
On 22 September, Robert served on a parliamentary committee to discuss raw sewage entering waterways, scrutinising the draft Water and Sewage Undertakers (Exit from Non-household Retail Market) (Consequential Provision) Regulations 2021.
Together with his parliamentary colleagues, they are looking at ensuring the law is more effective at tackling this problem.
Robert also recently supported Philip Dunne MP’s Sewage (Inland Waters) Bill in the last session of Parliament. It would have placed a duty on water companies to ensure raw sewage does not enter inland waters.
MPs backed the legislation on a cross-party basis to address this issue head-on. The Government has committed to bringing forward its legislation too.

Robert Largan, MP for High Peak, commented:
“It’s concerning to see reports from the Rivers Trust of raw sewage entering High Peak’s waterways.
“Over the coming months, I will be monitoring this issue closely and making the concerns of local people heard in Westminster, so we can deliver cleaner waters to future generations in High Peak.”
