The Government is raising tax-free bursaries and scholarships for teachers in several subjects, including science and maths, with trainee teachers receiving bursaries of up to £27,000 in a package of extra funding worth £181 million in total.
This builds on the Levelling Up Premium worth up to £3,000 tax-free for teachers moving to disadvantaged schools. The extra funding will help ensure schools in High Peak can draw on teachers that give students the best possible start in life.
The package will support aspiring teachers starting their training in September 2023, to attract and retain the best talent in high priority areas, including science, technology, and mathematics (STEM) subjects.
Top graduates applying to become teachers will be eligible for bursaries worth up to £27,000 and scholarships worth £29,000 for STEM subjects. Similar bursaries and scholarships are available for future language, geography, biology, English, and design and technology teachers, marking a substantial increase from those offered in previous years.
Additionally, teachers coming to England from overseas are now eligible for a new relocation premium to teach in high demand subjects, to help cover visas costs and relocation expenses.
Robert Largan, MP for High Peak, commented:
“Investing in education is an investment in our future.
“It is crucial that people receive the best possible education and gain the knowledge and skills needed to unleash their potential.
“This investment in bursaries and scholarships will help teachers in High Peak, building on the support Derbyshire already receives as an Education Investment Area.”
Schools Minister, Jonathan Gullis MP, commented:
“As a former teacher, I know that investing in our teachers is investing in young people. These generous bursaries and scholarships will attract the brightest and the best into teaching.
“Shoring up the talent pipeline to teach vital subject areas such as STEM and languages will, in turn, equip young people with the knowledge and skills they need to secure a bright future, and ensure that our economy remains globally competitive.”
