Over 60 local farmers have come together to form a green farmers co-operative, to advance the interests of the Peak District.
Local MPs Robert Largan (High Peak) and Sarah Dines (Derbyshire Dales) have joined up with the farmers, backing their work and meeting for a special summit in the Hope Valley.
Peakland Environmental Farmers (PEF) has formed as a group of farmers and moorland managers who have come together to support farmers and pursue ambitious environmental outcomes in the Dark Peak and Southwest Peak. Together, they represent over 30,000 hectares and nearly 70 landowners.
Following Brexit, the Government is introducing Environmental Land Management Schemes which will pay for sustainable farming practices, improving animal health and welfare, reducing carbon emissions, creating and preserving habitat, and making landscape-scale environmental changes.
Peakland Environmental Farmers has formed as a co-operative to advocate for the Peak District and secure a fair reward for local farmers for the new environmental scheme.
Peakland Environmental Farmers are also planning on working together to access green funds not available to individual farmers. They will be working to reduce bureaucracy and get funds straight into action on the ground in the High Peak.
Robert Largan, MP for High Peak, commented:
“I am very proud to support the amazing farmers of High Peak. They produce our food and serve as custodians of our beautiful countryside. I will always stand up for them!
“I’m really excited that Peakland Environmental Farmers have come together to fight for local farmers. I’m looking forward to be working closely with them.”
