Following the news that the mobile breast screening unit has been withdrawn from Buxton, Chapel-en-le-Frith and New Mills, hardworking local MP Robert Largan has urged local residents to sign his petition to reinstate it.
The High Peak MP has written to the local Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), highlighting his concerns that the loss of the service will affect local women, and he has also written to the Health Minister to raise his concerns and opposition to this move.
The loss of the service means that women who previously went to the mobile unit in Buxton, Chapel or New Mills will now have to travel to either Bakewell or Chesterfield, and the MP is worried that this could put women off attending their appointment.
Robert Largan MP said:
“The mobile breast screening unit is vital, especially for those who aren’t able to easily travel outside the area. I’m really worried that this will lead to fewer local women getting screened and that some women simply won’t be able to attend appointments.
“I’ve already written to the Clinical Commission Group to outline my opposition to this move. But I want to demonstrate the strength of local opposition to this withdrawal. I’ve therefore launched a petition, calling on the CCG to reinstate the breast screening unit.”
