Local MP Robert Largan spoke in favour of the Non-Domestic Rates (Public Lavatories) Bill in the House of Commons this week (16 July). This legislation will introduce 100 per cent business rates relief for public toilets in England and Wales, increasing access across town centres in the High Peak.
Robert Largan MP has been campaigning in High Peak for this change in legislation since before he was elected in December.
Robert Largan MP said in his speech:
“Even before the global pandemic, high streets were struggling badly. We need to do more to make it easier and more enjoyable for people to come and shop in our town centres and support our fantastic local businesses, which involves making it easier to park and get in by public transport or by cycling. It is also important to maintain the things that make our high streets unique and such enjoyable places to come to. At the same time, it means making sure that there are proper public toilet facilities.”
The High Peak MP went on to say that this legislation is not the end of the conversation and further action is needed to increase access to public toilets and secure the future of local high streets.
Robert Largan MP commented:
“I realise this is not the most glamorous of topics but I have been campaigning for giving public toilets 100 per cent business rate relief for a long time. This will make it easier for local councils to provide more toilets in High Peak.
“Public toilets are especially important for those with medical conditions and hidden disabilities. I believe this will make a big difference for our local high streets at a time when they need more help than ever before.”
