Labour Against Antisemitism have welcomed the suspension of a senior figure in High Peak Labour Party and have called on Labour Leader Keir Starmer to ban former High Peak MP Ruth George from ever standing for election again.
High Peak Constituency Labour Party Secretary and Glossopdale Labour Campaign Co-ordinator, Kasey Carver, has reportedly been suspended from the Labour Party over her conduct relating to antisemitism.
The Glossop resident and close ally of former High Peak MP, Ruth George, has been highly controversial for some time.
Carver has reportedly made a number of posts advocating anti-Jewish conspiracy theories including the claim that “Zionists influence the BBC” and that Israel provided “support for ISIS”. She also shared articles from a notorious Holocaust Denial blog: Semitic Controversies, which frequently refers to the “so called Holocaust”.
Despite these widespread reports, Ruth George and High Peal Labour Party continued to support Kasey Carver, with the local party issuing a statement defending Carver.
During the general election, Ms Carver gave a speech at Ruth George’s official campaign launch on 7th November 2019. At the time, some considered the choice of speaker to be a deliberate act of trolling the Jewish community.
This news follows the report by the independent Campaign Against Antisemitism who concluded that Ruth George, now a Whaley Bridge councillor, took part in racist discourse during her time as MP.
Euan Philipps, Spokesperson for the left-wing campaign group, Labour Against Antisemitism, commented:
“Great to see Kasey Carver finally suspended by Labour. Let’s also see a commitment from Keir Starmer that former High Peak MP Ruth George will never be allowed to stand for Labour in any election ever again.
“Under her watch, Labour antisemitism seemed to flourish in [High Peak] CLP.”
Robert Largan MP commented:
“This is a welcome and long overdue step. But there are still a number of other senior figures in High Peak Labour Party who been involved in anti-Jewish racism. I hope that further action is taken and we can move on from the deeply unpleasant Jeremy Corbyn-Ruth George era in High Peak.”
