High Peak MP Robert Largan and the Conservative Group on High Peak Borough Council have today called on the Council to ‘significantly improve’ their bid for Buxton in the Future High Street Fund.
Their call follows Buxton Civic Association also confirming that they do not support the current bid and outlining a number of changes they believe are needed, while two other key stakeholders are understood to feel their legitimate concerns and suggestions have been brushed aside.
The High Peak MP and the Conservative Group have serious concerns around a number of issues with the bid, including:
• The focus on The Springs shopping centre to the detriment of the rest of the town.
• The lack of proper consultation with local residents and civic associations prior to plans being drawn up
• An apparent resistance to constructive criticism and alternative suggestions
• The proposals lack sensitivity and imagination, as a consequence the Council has lost an opportunity to transform Buxton
Robert Largan MP said:
“Buxton town centre needs a truly transformational regeneration scheme and I’m really pleased that the Government shortlisted the town for the Future High Street Fund, but the Council’s bid as it currently stands risks being a huge missed opportunity for Buxton.”
“When Buxton was shortlisted, I urged the Council not to waste this opportunity on their own pet projects and to listen to the ideas of local people. Instead, we’ve got a bid that lacks the support of key stakeholders like Buxton Civic Association.
“We need to be making it easier and more enjoyable for people to come and visit Buxton, while retaining the town’s unique character that we all love.
“So I’m urging the Labour Council to listen and urgently improve bid so that they don’t end up submitting something that lacks local support.”
