The Business Secretary, Alok Sharma MP, announced the Government’s plans for the UK Internal Market in the House of Commons last week. In response, local MP Robert Largan highlighted the importance of hill farmers in the High Peak and how the four nations of the UK are stronger together.
The High Peak MP asked:
“The internal market has long been a cornerstone of our shared prosperity. Does the Secretary of State agree that we are stronger together and that we need to take steps to ensure that Peak district hill farmers can still sell their world-class lamb to all four corners of the United Kingdom?”
The Business Secretary responded:
“I thank my hon. Friend, who speaks up at all times for businesses in his constituency. I agree with him: we are absolutely stronger together as one United Kingdom.”
The Government has published plans that will ensure businesses in all parts of the UK can continue to trade across the country as they do now, avoiding new burdens in order to protect jobs and support our recovery from Coronavirus. This surge of power to the devolved nations marks both the return of powers from the EU and building on existing powers.
Robert Largan MP commented:
“I will always bang the drum for High Peak and the Union in Parliament. This includes promoting our local farmers who produce some of the finest British food, including the best lamb for miles around.
“Since being elected, I have already demonstrated my full support for local farmers when I rebelled against the Government on an amendment to the Agriculture Bill. It is in that same independent spirit that I will speak up for farmers in High Peak and across every nation in our United Kingdom.”
