On Thursday (5 November), High Peak MP, Robert Largan, spoke in Parliament in response to the Terrorism Threat Level increasing in the wake of attacks in Paris, Nice and Vienna.

Robert discussed the importance of providing support to France and Austria, and the need to give UK security services the tools to keep us safe. Robert also called on the Government to learn lessons from previous attacks, and urged them to act on the findings from the ongoing Manchester Arena bombing inquiry.

Robert Largan MP asked the Security Minister, the Rt Hon James Brokenshire MP:

“The attacks in Paris, Nice and Vienna are attacks on all of us that cut to the heart of our values. We all stand in solidarity with the people of France and Austria. To tackle the constantly evolving threat, it is vital that we give our security services the tools that they need and that we learn the lessons of past attacks. With that in mind, will the Minister urgently introduce legislation when the Manchester bombing inquiry reports on its findings?”

The Security Minister responded:

“As I have already indicated, we will continue to challenge ourselves as to what more we need to do. As we speak, the Manchester inquiry is rightly asking searching questions and taking evidence clearly. As I said, I know that this is a very difficult and painful time for many people. We want to see that inquiry conclude and to reflect on its recommendations. It is important to state that we have already taken a number of steps, but if there is more learning that we need to take or apply, we will do so.”

Robert Largan MP commented:

“This worrying news comes after terrorist attacks in Paris, Nice and Vienna. These awful attacks are an attack on us all, cutting to the heart of our way of life and our values of freedom of speech and expression.

“This is an important moment to pause and say thank you to all those in the police, armed forces and security services that work round the clock to keep us safe.”
