Last Wednesday (27 January), High Peak MP Robert Largan spoke in Parliament to condemn the poisoning of Alexey Navalny, the Russian opposition leader, during an Urgent Question.
The High Peak MP asked:
“The arrest of Mr Navalny is a disgraceful act by a Putin regime that is clearly terrified of being held to account by the Russian people. Last year, when Mr Navalny was poisoned, the Government took steps to freeze assets of senior figures in the Russian Government. Can the Minister confirm whether further asset freezes of both individuals and organisations are an option that the UK is prepared to consider this time?”
The Minister responded:
“When it comes to sanctions, we continue to look at this matter. We continue to work to protect and promote human rights, and we are considering all options for further actions. However, it would be inappropriate to speculate on future listings.”
Robert Largan MP has previously spoken in Parliament to urge Ministers to uphold the UK’s global responsibilities and warn of the dangers presented by aggressive regimes around the world, including Iran and its proxies.
Robert Largan MP commented:
“We saw the deadly effects of Novichok in the UK after the Salisbury attack. It is a disgrace that this chemical weapon continues to be used. The Putin regime must be held to account for its actions by the international community.
“For years, the Russian state has oppressed its citizens and intimidated its neighbours. It is our responsibility to stand with democratic friends and allies.”
