Local MP Robert Largan has been out with Peak District Moorland Group on the moors near Buxton to see the local wildlife and discuss how the group deals with wildfires caused by disposable barbecues.
The group are using modern technology to monitor nesting success. Robert was able to see skylark, meadow pipit, red grouse, lapwing, and curlew, including their chicks and eggs.
This beautiful wildlife and the hard work of the Peak District Moorland Group is being put at risk by moorland fires caused by disposable barbecues.
Robert is campaigning in Parliament for stronger legislation to tackle the use of disposable barbecues on moorland, pushing for more significant efforts to reduce the risk of wildfire.
Locally, Robert has successfully convinced several shops to remove disposable barbecues from their stores.
Several moorland estates, including the one Robert visited, displayed "No Moor BBQ" banners produced by the British Mountaineering Council, placing them in known problem areas.
Robert Largan, MP for High Peak, said:
"It's great to be out with the Peak District Moorland Group and see so much wildlife and see the birds doing so well.
"It's also an excellent opportunity to reinforce the message to visitors about the importance of following the newly-updated Countryside Code, and protecting and respecting our beautiful countryside.
"We're working hard to keep barbecues off our moors and to reduce the risk of wildfires."
