Blue John Cavern in Castleton recently welcomed local MP Robert Largan for a tour of the Peak District’s word-famous cavern.
The Cavern is steeped in history, taking its name from the semi-precious mineral Blue John, which has been mined for centuries, and is still mined today in small amounts outside the tourist season and made locally into jewellery. The miners who work the remaining seams are also the guides for the underground public tours.
Last year, as the Cavern reopened following the first lockdown, Robert supported Blue John Cavern by contacting Ministers to resolve a dispute with the Health and Safety Executive over Covid guidelines.
This May, following the reopening of indoor entertainment venues, Robert contacted Derbyshire County Council as camper vans blocked access to Blue John Cavern.
Following Robert's intervention, the Council installed additional signage and parking restrictions using temporary powers enacted by the Government because of the pandemic.
Despite these additional measures, camper vans remain an issue, regularly blocking parking spaces and the bus turning circle.
Robert Largan, MP for High Peak, commented:
"I enjoyed visiting Blue John Cavern near Castleton for a tour of the caves and to discuss a few local issues with the business.
"If you've never been, I strongly recommend a visit to the wonderful caves that are a true gem of the Peak District."
