Local MP Robert Largan has joined the Dogs Trust in calling for an end to the trade in smuggled puppies.
At an event in Parliament last week, the MP for High Peak met with the Dogs Trust to discuss the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill, and what more can be done to tackle the issue.
To tackle puppy smuggling, the Bill will reduce the number of pets that can travel under pet travel rules.
New powers to restrict the movement of pets on welfare grounds will also be introduced. These include increasing the minimum age of puppies that can be imported to the UK, and restricting the import of pregnant dogs and those with mutilations.
In addition, the Bill will also ban the export of live animals for slaughter and fattening; introduce a new requirement for primates to be kept at zoo-level standards; provide the police with new powers to protect livestock from dangerous dogs; and tighten existing regulations for zoos.
The Bill is currently being scrutinised by the House of Commons Public Bill Committee, and taking evidence from experts in the field. They are due to report their recommendations by 18th November.
Robert Largan, MP for High Peak commented:
“I care deeply about animal welfare. Puppy smuggling is a cruel and utterly abhorrent trade which I am determined to see ended.
“I very much welcome the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill, which will introduce some of the world’s strongest protections for pets, livestock and kept wild animals.
“The Dogs Trust have highlighted a really important issue here, and I look forward to the Bill returning to Parliament.”
