Derbyshire County Council has announced proposals for a consultation on the future of seven care homes, including Goyt Valley House, a residential care home in New Mills.
As part of the new consultation, the Council proposes refurbishing the care home (which would require a 40-week closure of the home) or permanently closing the care home and providing alternative local provision, by autumn 2022.
Robert Largan, MP for the High Peak, who has visited the home several times to meet staff and residents, is campaigning to keep Derbyshire County Council to their commitment that no Derbyshire care home would close without a new local provision to replace it.
Robert, along with residents and staff, successfully campaigned on a cross-party basis against the closure of Goyt Valley House in 2020.
The seven care homes are under review as a report found them unsound and unsafe due to the previous Council administration’s mismanagement and lack of investment spanning three decades.
A formal public consultation will commence on 22 November 2021 and last for 12 weeks. Robert urges residents, family, and staff to respond, saying the Council needs to refurbish Goyt Valley House or provide new world class local provision in its place.
In Parliament, Robert has campaigned for a cross-party solution to fix adult social care and called for greater health and social care investment.
Robert Largan, MP for High Peak, said:
“Derbyshire County Council has announced a consultation on the future of Goyt Valley House. I know this will cause anxiety to staff, residents and family.
“I previously campaigned alongside residents and staff against the closure of this care home in 2020. My view has not changed.
“I have seen first-hand the fantastic care that residents receive from its incredibly dedicated staff.
“I have heard testimonies from relatives and residents about just how important the care home is to them and their local community.
“I will be campaigning to ensure Derbyshire County Council keep their commitment that no Derbyshire care home will close without new world class local provision to replace it.
“I urge everyone to respond to the consultation.”
