Last Thursday (10 February), MP for High Peak, Robert Largan, pushed the Government to improve the recruitment and retention of dentists, and ensure the long-term financial sustainability of NHS dentistry.
During the debate in Westminster Hall, Mr Largan praised the work of dentists in the High Peak who have worked hard throughout the pandemic.
The High Peak MP also raised concerns about the number of routine dental appointments missed because of the pandemic and the consequences for public health.
The debate was secured by the Member of Parliament for Waveney, Peter Aldous, and was well attended—with 23 speakers from across the parties.
This follows the news that the Department of Health & Social Care are investing an additional £50 million in NHS dentistry—including £8.9 million for the Midlands—to help patients access dental treatment and catch up on the backlog of appointments.
Robert Largan, MP for High Peak, commented:
“I would like to thank the dentists, orthodontists, hygienists, technicians, and all those who have worked incredibly hard in dental practices throughout the pandemic.
“Too many people are finding it impossible to register with a new NHS dental practice. More needs to be done to improve both the recruitment and the retention of dentists.
“Swift action is also needed to ensure the long-term sustainability of NHS dentistry.”
