Derbyshire County Council has confirmed that they are decommissioning Goyt Valley House, a residential care home in New Mills, and seeking potential alternative uses for the site.
Robert Largan MP had previously, successfully, campaigned on a cross-party basis against the closure of Goyt Valley House in 2020. However, a recent report found Goyt Valley House, in addition to six other local care homes, was unsafe due to the previous Council administration’s mismanagement and lack of investment spanning three decades.
In a recent meeting with officials from Derbyshire County Council about Goyt Valley House, Robert was given a number of commitments about social care in High Peak.
These commitments include residents being able to choose where to relocate to, and for the Council to provide appropriate top-up funding for additional costs at a new care home. Travel allowance funding is also to be put in place to ensure family and friends can still visit their loved ones.
All residents have now been relocated from the home and decommissioning has started.
Robert Largan, MP for High Peak, commented:
“When the future of Goyt Valley House was previously under threat, I successfully campaigned alongside residents and staff against its closure, so I am hugely disappointed with this outcome.
“I know the recent upheaval will have caused a huge amount of anxiety, so I am immensely grateful for the tireless commitment and expertise of the care staff.
“I am glad, however, that Derbyshire County Council have provided a number of assurances for ongoing support to Goyt Valley House residents.
“I will continue to do all that I can to support residents, families, and the amazing staff of Goyt Valley House in ensuring that they are given all the help and support that they need.
“I will keep campaigning for a new world class care home to be built locally and to fix our care system.”
