After nearly 50 years of dither and delay, the Secretary of State for Transport confirmed today (16th November) that a Development Consent Order has been approved for the Mottram Bypass.
This follows High Peak MP Robert Largan’s long-running petition to build the bypass which has been signed by nearly 4,000 local residents.
Before being elected in December 2019, the last time the Mottram Bypass was mentioned in Parliament was in May 2016. Since then, Mr Largan has raised the bypass on several occasions in Parliament; met with the Roads Minister to discuss the issue; worked on a cross-party basis with Stalybridge & Hyde MP Jonathan Reynolds; and ensured a commitment to the bypass was included in the Government’s Road Investment Strategy.
The Bypass will alleviate congestion on the roads around Glossop travelling between Manchester and Sheffield.
Mr Largan has committed to continue to fight for the key second phase of the Bypass around Tintwistle and is working with local residents on proposal for a “Village Gateway” traffic calming scheme.
Robert Largan, MP for High Peak, commented:
“Before I was elected as your local MP, the last time any High Peak MP had even mentioned the Mottram Bypass in Parliament was in May 2016. I promised to make the Bypass my number one priority and I am delighted by today’s announcement. Construction of the Bypass will now begin next year.
“I want to thank the nearly 4,000 local people who have signed my long-running petition. This is a fantastic day for residents in Glossop, Hadfield, Padfield, Charlesworth, and Gamesley!
“This shows what we can achieve when we work together.”
